A city gate, in the old-Russian massive style, depicted by a powerful hymn with the sound of bells – who does not remember 'The Great Gate of Kiev' from Mussorgsky's piano cycle 'Pictures at an Exhibition'? The combined sounds of piano and orchestra increase the magic, suggestive powers of the work and of the pictures and images that are generated in our mind's eye.
