| Description: |
Samuel Rhodes, the violist of the renowned Juilliard String Quartet praises Paul Hindemith's string quartets for their 'depth of content, exuberant vivacity and refined compositional technique'. The composer created the Quartet Op. 10 at the Alsacian front in 1918, and yet the work shows no sign of the terrible wartime events. The three-movement work is full of youthful exuberance, reflecting Hindemith's new compositional techniques. His mastery and imagination in using the instruments prove that the young composer was already completely familiar with the string quartet, the king among genres.
