| Description: |
Hans Pfitzner's 'Palestrina-Vorspiel 2' is characterized by the fierce drama of a grim fight. It is part of the three 'Palestrina-Vorspiele' that the composer compiled from his opera of the same title on the most important composer of the Renaissance. The work 'Musikalische Legenden' composed in 1912-1915 deals with a timeless theme that is still up-to-date: The difficulties and problems of an artist towards whom the outside world is ill disposed. While the quiet enraptured sounds of the preludes to the first and third acts describe the feelings of the lonely Palestrina, the fast, richly orchestrated prelude to the second act points to the session of the Council of Trient at which the different opinions on the 'true art' clash with 'full force and wildness'.
