| Description: |
The circumstances under which this music was created are tragic: Viktor Ullmann wrote his late Romantic orchestral overture 'Don Quixote tanzt Fandango' in 1944 under most extreme conditions and with an indomitable urge to create while incarcerated in the concentration camp of Theresienstadt (from 1942 to 1945). He completed the work only a few months before he was transported to and killed in Auschwitz. What Ullmann had merely sketched on whatever paper had been available, was completed by Bernhard Wulff with a brilliant orchestration in the late 1980s. The result is a caleidoscope full of vitality, colourfulness and passion that, in view of the circumstances of its creation, has become a tragic piece of evidence of that time.
