There is hardly any better 'Latvian ambassador in music' than the composer Peteris Vasks. Sorrow at the destruction of nature, at the decline of Latvian national identity, but also hope for better times – these are the thoughts upon which his expressive compositions are based, like the 'Cantabile per archi' composed in 1979. Subdued and elegiac at the beginning of the composition, the mood gradually gains in 'brightness' until, after the flowing movement has subsided for a short moment, an impulse of the high-pitched strings causes a new awakening of the flow of sounds.
