Karl Amadeus Hartmann composed his ironic and biting short-opera Chaplin-Ford-Trott in the 1920s as a reaction to the enormusly growing industry in the U.S. and their dominating position in the world economy. In this piece, he uses Charly Chaplin and Henry Ford as representatives of two completely opposite poles of what is significant for the U.S.
Our excerpt shows the introduction for two pianos. A catchy Foxtrott tune forms the prelude to a sneering male chorus: "U.S.A.: Land of the infinite possibilities - we are doing whatever we wanna do."
