A glittering ball at the castle of the fairy-tale king evoked in the listener's mind by the then thirteen-year-old composer. Magnificence, splendour and sensuality are joined together to form a tableau for large-scale orchestra which will inspire dreaming. Each passage seems to evoke the rustling of silk and velvet, and each bar the happy murmur of the ball guests. Those whose minds are receptive to such evocation will be taken by Korngold on a time trip into a long bygone era when parties were conducted in sumptuous style.
