| Description: |
'Time and place, if I were forced to determine them, would be a casino in Baden-Baden in the age of Romanticism. And it is into this picture that the marches and melodies of Rossini, Messager, Johann Strauß and from my own Symphony in Eb major may well be imagined, as they drift over from the local opera house or the Kursaal to the casino.' Stravinsky who loved to play poker had long thought of giving the game musical form. When he was commissioned by the directors of the American Ballet in 1936 to write a card-game ballet, he created a composition full of gambling wit and musical allusions. This is about creating a ballet version of a game of poker in three rounds which is always muddled up by the joker. Each movement, i.e. each round, begins with a march-like introduction, representing the shuffling of the cards. 'Jeu de Cartes' is a witty and elegant divertissement of great graphic quality.
