| Description: |
The Canadian composer Glenn Gould, who died at an early age, undoubtedly was the most eccentric pianist of his time. His transcription for solo piano of the 'Meistersinger-Vorspiel' (from the opera by Richard Wagner) originally scored for orchestra combines eccentric pianism and solemn dignity. He succeeded in creating a technical masterpiece: An enthusiast of Wagner, he also wove the seemingly casual secondary parts into his contrapuntal piano setting, while at the same time maintaining the pompous drama and the major lines of the original work. Published in the Edition Schott series, the Meistersinger-Vorspiel is a challenge to the ambitious pianist.
