Olli Mustonen’s “Petite Suite” begins with a berceuse, a lullaby: not usually a customary first movement for the traditional suite form. On closer inspection, nothing is at all customary in Mustonen’s work, particularly not the catchiness of these dulcet tones: a brief melody which repeats itself hypnotically, intensifies itself and then dies away once more. The few bars are however sufficient to relate a bedtime story: the tale of an eventful day, of human relationships and conversations and of the Finnish landscape with its infinite number of lakes.
