"The Endless Column" is a sculpture by the Romanian artist Constantin Brâncuşi. Although it is merely 95 ft tall, its shape lets the beholder think that it goes up to the sky.
Sound magician György Ligeti creates the same illusion in his 14th piano study. He places melodic layers onto each other so that the piece evokes the impression of a melody that rises for minutes. In fact, it marks time. However, this is done in such an hasty and aggressive way that you won't believe that there is no progress...
