| Description: |
'I was looking for a musical world that can evoke the atmosphere of a mythical, pre-Christian time, while having the profound emotional qualities of a drama by Shakespeare. I found Tippett!' wrote the famous choreographer John Neumeier from Hamburg about his ballet 'Hamlet' performed for the first time in 1985 for which he used the triple concerto of the English composer that had been created seven years ago. The lyric drama of the 'Hamlet' sounds of this concerto is held together by a 'birth' motif which opens each part of the initial movement and returns shortly before the end of the final movement. Especially in the slow middle movement, Tippett used pentatonic, myth-like sounds which he had heard on the island of Java.
