| Description: |
It is called 'Dance of the Seven Veils', that lascivious erotic 'quasi-striptease' which Salome performs for Herod under the blood-red moon. But the Oriental-seeming music full of heavy sensuality has little to do with the pleasures of dancing. In exchange for her dance which, rightly, is interpreted as a symbol of her sexual devotion, and in revenge on the man who rejected her, Salome is going to ask Herod to give her the head of the prophet Jokanaan in a silver charger. At its premiere at the Dresden Opera in 1905, Richard Strauss's opera 'Salome' based on a story by Oscar Wilde even aroused disgust from the audience. For Strauss not only presented a decadent, pleasure-hungry society, but also clearly referred to sexual excesses in a then-scandalous manner. Performed by a 106-member orchestra, 'Salome' fascinates by its incredible colourful splendour, the dramatic explosions and a breathtaking tension.
