Marietta's Song (1916-1919)
frei nach Georges Rodenbachs "Bruges-la-morte" von Paul Schott, op. 12
Categories: Vocal Music Romance Film Passion Melancholy Love
Description:
You are hearing one of the most beautiful and most moving love duets in opera history, sloppily speaking, a tearjerker which is difficult to resist. Korngold completed 'Die tote Stadt' at the age of barely 23. The most frequently performed stage work of the 1920s, it has been performed at the opera stages of the world until this day. The libretto goes back to the successful novel Bruges-la-morte by the Belgian writer Georges Rodenbach. The scene of the novel is set in Brugge. The protagonist is the widow Paul who, after a phantastic and erotic dream, becomes aware that he cannot get his dead wife Marie back to real life. The musical states of uncertainty between dreams and thoughts as well as the two hits that are a must in every opera request programme are especially enchanting: Marietta's song 'Glück das mir verblieb' and Paul's aria 'Mein Sehnen, mein Wähnen'.
