| Description: |
'The utterly original lifework of a great and entertaining outsider of this century's music, of a gentle loner! The "Studies for player piano" by the American Conlon Nancarrow (born in 1912) show in a both playful and virtuoso manner that the use of a player piano does not necessarily lead to the automation of the music or to the composer's churning out of compositions.' This is what the jury of the 'Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik' wrote when awarding this prize to the Wergo recording of 'Studies for player piano' in 1991. In our sound example, the breathtaking Study No. 3a, the influences of jazz are particularly pronounced. Nancarrow lets up to eight independent voices ring out simultaneously with superhuman rhythmic precision and incredible speed.
