| Description: |
'The more essential, more simple the statement, the more immediate and stronger the effect.' This dogma of Carl Orff applies particularly to the intense rhythmic 'Gassenhauer' for percussion instruments which is based on a lute setting by Hans Neusiedler from 1536. The composition written in 1952 forms part of the Orff Schulwerk, an approach to music and movement education developed by Orff together with the music educator Gunild Keetman. All pieces of this educational work for which the composer developed his world-famous set of instruments impress through extraordinarily physical power that is obtained mainly from their reduction to the essential and elementary. They are meant to encourage improvisation and creativity and stimulate the joy of music-making.
