The murderous pursuit of the Argonauts in Hans Werner Henze's opera 'Die Bassariden' gains even more speed and unbridled wildness in the orchestral version. Fanfares, orchestral beats and dramatic expressiveness conjure up an atmosphere reminiscent of monumental historical films in the listener's mind. Henze wrote the opera in the years 1964 and 1965. Shortly after the premiere, 'Mänadenjagd', one of the most outstanding passages, stood its ground as independent orchestral work.
