(1954)
für Trompete in C und Orchester
Instrumentation: trumpet and orchestra
Categories: Orchestra Trumpet Night Music lazy weekends Comedy & Fun Film Melancholy
Description:
A thrilling synthesis of jazz and classical music. Bernd Alois Zimmermann, one of the most important German composers of the 20th century, lets the negro spiritual 'Nobody Knows' show through in his trumpet concerto composed in 1954 right from the beginning. But the melody, with improvisational elements added to it, develops only after a large-scale intensification. According to what he said himself, both the spiritual and his composition 'touch deep emotions such as fear and hope'. To Zimmermann, the merging of seemingly different musical styles is a symbol of the possible overcoming of racial hatred. Apart from the common instrumentation for orchestra, without the strings though, Zimmermann uses a big band with abundant percussion. Thus, Zimmermann has created an attractive contribution to concert life and a valuable addition to the trumpet repertoire of our time.
