It was in 1974 that Krzysztof Penderecki strode through the seven gates of Jerusalem for the first time. The entire Holy Land made a deep impression on the composer, especially because he had the feeling to follow the trail of Jesus Christ. Upon suggestion of Teddy Kollek, the legendary mayor of Jerusalem, among others, he was commissioned in 1995 to compose a work for the celebrations to mark the 3000th anniversary of Jerusalem. Penderecki decided to write a large-scale vocal work with the title 'Seven Gates of Jerusalem' which was premiered in Jerusalem in 1997 and became his seventh symphony. The number seven has always held a great fascination for Penderecki so that it appears in his work again and again, beginning with the seven movements of the symphony to the seven powerful fortissimo chords which close the moving oratorio.
