| Description: |
This music is nothing for bad nerves. Hans Werner Henze's fantasia 'Erlkönig' [The Erl-King] for large-scale orchestra was inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's famous ballad of the same name. The ballad begins by 'Who rides there so late through the night dark and drear?', and indeed, one might think to be taken on a wild ride. It brings before the listener's inner eye a real horror scenario. This is about deep-rooted fears, about panic: Pursued by an eerie stranger, the hunted dashes through the nightmarish landscape of his psyche. Full of colours and effects.
